August 2012: The International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) Bridges Network has published the August-September 2012 edition of “BioRes Review” on the theme, “The Future of Green Trade.” The publication reflects on the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), in particular examining trade and environment-related issues arising from the green economy discussion.

The issue begins with a Special meeting report, titled “Critical Voices Drown out Official Outcome in Rio,” which notes that the task of bringing the agreed outcomes forward lies with governments, including negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and that several items have been pushed forward to the 68th UN General Assembly (UNGA) in October 2013.

The issue also features articles on: the World Trade Organization (WTO) implications of Australia’s new illegal logging prohibition bill; the state of the green economy discussions and expected actions after Rio+20; sustainable development implications of South Africa’s “rhino wars”; perverse subsidies in the fisheries sector; and harnessing trade and markets for sustainable energy in Africa. The issue also highlights various global, regional and national trade-related news items, including on illegal wildlife trade in Gabon, the carbon tax in Australia and the carbon labelling scheme in the EU.
