iclei-cbd4 December 2014: ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability Cities Biodiversity Center (CBC) announced the publication of the ‘Biodiversity Mainstreaming Toolbox for land-use planning and development in Gauteng,’ which offers maps and guidelines that local government officials can use to ensure that biodiversity is sufficiently considered in land-use planning.

The Toolbox offers an introduction to biodiversity management at the local level. It includes a section on the importance of biodiversity for climate change resilience and brings together the broad range of biodiversity management and conservation tools relevant to the urban context in Gauteng, South Africa. The Toolbox aims to ensure that users have a good understanding of what tools exist, their purpose, what tools should be used for what activities, and where to find further information and the tools themselves.

The Toolbox, launched in each municipality in Gauteng at the end of November 2014, was compiled by ICLEI’s Africa Secretariat and the CBC as part of the South African National Biodiversity Institute’s (SANBI) Grasslands Programme.
