6 June 2010: Raymond Benjamin, Secretary General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), spoke at the International Air Transport Authority (IATA) Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit, which took place from 6-8 June 2010, in Berlin, Germany.
Benjamin discussed progress achieved by ICAO in improving the environmental credentials of the air transport industry. He highlighted ICAO’s success in creating the world’s first globally harmonized sectoral agreement on mitigating climate change, and the commitment by ICAO’s Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection to a timetable for a carbon dioxide standard aiming at 2013. He expressed the view that these developments had created a favorable context for further environmental work at the upcoming 37th ICAO Assembly, scheduled to take place from 28 September-8 October 2010, at ICAO headquarters in Montreal, Canada.
