story highlights

The International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) highlights the “Peoples' Summit,” which is being organized in parallel with the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) in order to request that governments give political power to the Conference.

29 July 2011: The International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) has published a special issue of its Voices Rising magazine, on the theme “People’s Summit to Rio+20.” The issue highlights the purpose of, and preparations for, the Peoples’ Summit, which is being organized by civil society organizations in parallel with the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

The main objective of the People’s Summit is to request that governments give political power to the Conference. The issue also summarizes an interview with Celita Eccher, ICAE Secretary General, on the link between education and climate change, especially on the road to Rio+20. The interview highlights, inter alia, proposals for ICAE’s activities in this respect, such as a proposal for ICAE to promote and work across the entire UNCSD process and have active participation in the UNFCCC Conferences of the Parties (COPs), and to create a global day of action to celebrate the contributions of all member organizations that work to address climate change.

The special issue also highlights the launch of a new dedicated website on the UNCSD and the first edition of the “Road to Rio” online magazine by the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS). [Publication: Voices Rising, Year IX-Number 396 Special Issue]
