CBD2 August 2012: The High-level Panel on Global Assessment of Resources for Implementing the Strategic Plan (HLP-GAR), established under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and sponsored by the UK and India, held an online consultation on 2 August 2012. The consultation aims to start the Panel’s work in a transparent manner, and provide CBD Parties with the opportunity to exchange views on the subject.

Webinar participants discussed reports from researchers looking at specific targets or groups of targets of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-202. Additional comments on the documents addressed may be submitted by 13 August 2012.

The main objectives of the High-level Panel are to: at the global level, provide as robust an assessment as possible of the resources needed to achieve the 20 Aichi Targets in the timeframe up to the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the CBD (COP 11), recognizing that a comprehensive assessment may not be possible, but a credible assessment of current knowledge will be valuable; present the cost estimates derived in the context of knowledge about the benefits of biodiversity and current funding streams, to help frame and stimulate discussion around meeting these resource needs; and provide recommendations of future work, to help Parties better understand how they can finance the Strategic Plan.
