29 January 2013: The Global Water Partnership (GWP) Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) has released a GWP ToolBox case study on a constructed reed bed wastewater treatment plant in Vidrare, Bulgaria.

The project, which started in 2008, was coordinated by Women in Europe for a Common Future and ECOWorld 2007, with financial support from the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU). The plant took seven months to build, and entered into service in April 2011, providing a cost-efficient and effective means for treating household wastewater.

Capacity building for employees of the local orphanage was conducted to teach them how to maintain the constructed wetland and ensure proper operation. The project now serves as a model for development of wastewater treatment for other villages in Bulgaria. [GWP-CEE Press Release] [Project Webpage]
