Global LEAP Presents Award for Solar TV

fosfera received the award in the Emerging Technology—Small category for its low-voltage, solar-powered television, which is designed for households lacking electricity from the grid.

Global LEAP16 May 2014: fosfera, a company that manufactures solar-powered off-grid lighting products and appliances won the Global Lighting and Energy Access Partnership’s (Global LEAP) inaugural Outstanding Off-Grid Appliance Award. fosfera received the award in the Emerging Technology—Small category for its low-voltage, solar-powered television, which is designed for households lacking electricity from the grid.

Caroline McGregor, US Department of Energy (DOE), announced the award, saying that efficient, high-quality appliances like fosfera’s “are essential to creating and sustaining demand for technologies like off-grid solar.” DOE is the lead agency for Global LEAP, an initiative of the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM).

The company, in partnership with the Lighting Africa program, a joint initiative of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the World Bank, plans on getting the television to market in the next two months.

Five initiatives were recognized in the Outstanding Off-Grid Televisions category, and three other winners were recognized in the category Outstanding Off-Grid LED Room Lighting Appliance. [Lighting Africa Press Release] [Global LEAP Awards Website]
