Global Alliance Clean Cookstoves20 November 2014: The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves has published a living document that outlines a prospective pathway for enabling 60 million homes to adopt clean cooking technologies by 2017. The ‘Market Enabling Roadmap 2015-2017’ aims to guide Phase 2 of the Alliance’s work and builds on lessons learned in the first Phase.

The Alliance’s first phase (2012-14) focused on launching global and in-country efforts to rapidly grow the clean cookstove and fuel sector. In its second phase, the Alliance aims to drive investments, innovation and operations to scale while continuing to use a focused geographic strategy. In its third phase (2018-20), the Alliance plans to establish a thriving and sustainable global market for clean cookstoves and fuels.

A large part of Phase 2’s work will focus on raising public awareness to encourage adoption of clean cookstoves, thus encouraging demand and stimulating the market for the technologies, as described in the Roadmap. The Alliance plans to undertake global, national and local public information campaigns that “promote sustainable behavior change.” According to the Alliance, these campaigns will supplement resources directed to innovation, production, distribution and consumer financing mechanisms.

The Alliance also plans to carry out intensive research, standardization and labeling and certification work in Phase 2. According to the document, the Alliance will require an estimated US$500 million in grants and investments to complete its second phase. It notes that Roadmap timelines are only indicative, as implementation will depend on funding.

The document also features accomplishments, highlights and statistics from the Alliance’s first phase. [Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves Press Release] [Publication: Market Enabling Roadmap 2015 – 2017] [Publication: Market Enabling Roadmap 2015-2017 Executive Summary]
