GEF Protected Areas Project in Mongolia Seeks Financial Sustainability

The project implemented in Mongolia´s Orkhon Valley National Park will enable park authorities to design and implement a sustainable financing strategy to adequately monitor the 364,538 ha park, and provide alternative sources of income to the nomad communities living in the area.

GEF20 June 2011: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is implementing a project for strengthening the protected area system in Orkhon Valley National Park in Mongolia, which aims to increase dramatically the level of financing for protected area management and reduce threats to biodiversity through collaborative management of protected areas.

The project includes a US$1.3 million grant for 2010-2015. Park fees and fine generate US$17,000 (21 million Tughrik) per year. The GEF Project is expected to build capacity among park authorities and support them in generating a sustainable financing strategy for the future as well as establish mechanisms to promote alternative sources of livelihoods for nomad communities using the park as cattle grazing grounds.
