23 March 2009: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has announced the Carbon Benefits Project (CBP), implemented by the UN Environment Programme, which aims to provide a solution to the problems related to measuring terrestrial carbon, particularly on complex landscapes.

The CBP uses a monitoring process designed to work in a variety of landscape settings – desert and forest, farmland and village – and provides a cost-effective system that integrates the latest remote sensing technology and analysis, ground-based measurement and statistical analysis. The Project will also include a best practices component on key data on appropriate land-use practices that can improve quality of life while contributing to climate change mitigation.
