GEC Background Paper Takes Snapshot of Green Economy Landscape

This paper highlights that: national "green economy" plans are emerging across the world; UNEP and other UN agencies are prioritizing green growth and green economy; governments are aligning both domestic and foreign policy around green growth; and green growth remains very divisive, with Latin American governments and some members of the Group of 77 (G77) in fierce opposition to the concept.

September 2012: The Green Economy Coalition (GEC) has published a draft paper for consultation, which seeks to provide a concise review of “who is doing what and where” on green economy. The paper incorporates input from coalition members, including WWF, Ethical Markets, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED).

The paper highlights that: UNEP continues to expand its green economy work through advisory services to governments; national “green economy” plans are emerging across the world; a number of other UN agencies are also prioritizing green growth and green economy; governments are aligning both domestic and foreign policy around green growth; and green growth remains very divisive, with Latin American governments and some members of the Group of 77 (G77) in fierce opposition to the concept.
