GBIf16 September 2013: The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) has announced the availability of over half a million individual records from the Rio de Janeiro Botanic Gardens (JBRJ) Research Institute. The collection, dating back to the early 19th century, serves as Brazil’s first contribution to the BGIF since it joined in 2012.

The JBRJ serves as a GBIF national node and is working towards a network of institutions whose data will be available through both GBIF and a national portal. The Brazilian Biodiversity Information System (SiBBr), which endorsed the Institute’s contribution, is implemented by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) of Brazil, with technical support from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility was founded in 2001 as an intergovernmental scientific infrastructure aimed at providing free and open access to biodiversity data, via the Internet. Records in the GBIF dataset are available via the GBIF data portal. [GBIF Portal] [GBIF Website] [GBIF Press Release]
