The Manaus Declaration, signed by 11 countries from Central and South America and observer delegations from Indonesia and the Congo Basin, established the International Alliance of Forest Peoples, and calls on governments to respect forest dwellers’ rights to their land, natural resources and their traditional ways of life, particularly when considering compensation for environmental services such as a carbon-trading plan.
