The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Executive Board has registered the Improved Cooking Stoves (ICS) for Nigeria Programme of Activities (PoA), which aims to promote dissemination of improved cooking stoves to households in Nigeria.
The stoves save up to 80% of fuel wood through the application of energy efficiency measures in thermal applications of non-renewable biomass.
9 February 2012: The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Executive Board has registered the first African cookstove CDM Programme of Activity (PoA), under which up to 100,000 improved cookstoves will be distributed over five years, generating emission reductions of up to 250,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually.
The Improved Cooking Stoves (ICS) for Nigeria Programme of Activities is a joint initiative of two German non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Atmosfair gGmbH and Lernen-Helfen-Leben e.V. (LHL), and the Nigerian Developmental Association for Renewable Energies (DARE). The PoA is being hosted in Nigeria and coordinated/managed by Atmosfair. The PoA aims to promote dissemination of improved cooking stoves to households in Nigeria. The stoves save up to 80% of fuel wood through the application of energy efficiency measures in thermal applications of non-renewable biomass. In addition to generating emission reductions, the PoA will also, inter alia, reduce wood consumption so as to allow the natural recovery of forests, cut down the fuel wood bill for households, and result in decreased indoor air pollution from wood smoke and its harmful health consequences.
Atmosfair is also inviting further investment in CDM Programme Activities (CPAs) under the PoA in return for Gold Standard certified emission reductions (CERs), which alternatively can be re-purchased by Atmosfair at premium prices. [Programme of Activity Design Document] [Atmosfair Press Release]
