7 October 2010: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has assisted the Government of Bangladesh in establishing plans for prioritizing investments that will improve the availability of food and reduce malnutrition. The FAO work is introducing new crop varieties with tolerant seeds in the coastal zones, and farmers are being trained to cope with changing weather patterns. Attention is also being paid to improving water and infrastructure management to protect fields from tidal surges and sea water intrusion. This work comes in response to a series of climate and market stresses that have impacted the food security of Bangladesh over recent years. [FAO Press Release]
