Building on its climate change programme of work, the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has begun to draft guidelines for the integration of genetic diversity into national climate change adaptation planning.
16 April 2014: Building on its climate change programme of work, the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has begun to draft guidelines for the integration of genetic diversity into national climate change adaptation planning.
This process has been facilitated through an expert meeting held from 8-9 April 2014, at the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, which brought together climate scientists, crop, livestock and forestry experts, as well as policy experts. The workshop shared a first draft of the guidelines, and included discussions on the potential for the guidelines to raise the profile of genetic resources for food and agriculture in the development of National Adaptation Plans (NAPs).
The FAO’s genetic-resources specific guidelines will complement the UNFCCC technical guidelines for developing NAPs that were developed by the UNFCCC Least Developed Country Expert Group (LEG) in 2012.
The next revisions of the draft guidelines will be considered by the Commission on Genetic Resources’ Intergovernmental Technical Working Groups on plant, animal and forest genetic resources. They will be discussed by the Commission during its January 2015 session.
