1 July 2013: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a brief that underscores opportunities to use the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure as a standard upon which to base national resource management policy.
The brief presents an introduction to the strengths of the Guidelines and the variety of arenas where they may be applied, including academic courses, regional workshops and national policy making. FAO notes that it is working to raise “national capacity to turn words on paper into on-the-ground action by using the Guidelines as a reference in national policies, legislation and programmes.” The publication also notes the Guidelines’ usefulness in setting principles and benchmarks for activities, and protecting legitimate tenure rights.
