3 May 2011: Addressing the Astana Economic Forum in Kazakhstan, Jacques Diouf, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), highlighted food insecurity in a number of Central Asian countries and stressed the need to strengthen cooperation on trade.

Diouf called on Central Asian countries to establish a monitoring system for weather to predict declines in crop production and improve climate disaster preparedness. He noted that a workshop will be organized on the topic of actions to address high food prices in June for the European and Central Asian Regions. [FAO Press Release]
