The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has provided an update of activities being undertaken through Farmer Field Schools in Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Nicaragua to implement the provisions of the Rotterdam Convention.
Activities are focused on strengthening capacities of countries to monitor and report problems with the use of Severely Hazardous Pesticide Formulations (SHPFs).

According to FAO, actions are being led by Designated National Authorities in each country, in collaboration FAO country offices.
Activities are focused on: the proper and safe use of pesticides; diagnosis of acute pesticide poisoning; safe disposal of pesticides; alternatives to endosulfan (recently declared a Persistent Organic Pollutant under the Stockholm Convention); and good agricultural practices.
