story highlights

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have opened public online discussions on hunger, food and nutrition security, feeding into an intergovernmental process to agree on objectives, targets and indicators in the post-2015 development framework.

The World We Want 201519 November 2012: The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP), with supporting partners, have opened online public discussions on the theme of hunger, food and nutrition security as part of consultation processes to define the post-2015 development agenda.

The discussions are taking place on the “World We Want 2015” website and are open to all. Reference materials and discussion papers are also available on the website. Participants are addressing questions about key lessons from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) framework in relation to hunger; experiences of “what works best;” and how to draw on current initiatives such as the Zero Hunger Challenge launched at the Rio+20 conference by the UN Secretary-General, and the Global Strategic Framework for Food Security and Nutrition elaborated by the Committee on World Food Security (CFS). Participants are also invited to propose objectives, targets and indicators, in addition or in place of those currently identified through these initiatives.

Besides online discussions, FAO and WFP are conducting a consultation with CFS stakeholders in early 2013, and a high-level expert meeting in March 2013, hosted by the Government of Spain. Other UN agencies and civil society are supporting the process, including the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Bioversity International and the UN Secretary-General’s special representative on food security and nutrition.

FAO and WFP will draw on contributions to the consultation process to feed into UN General Assembly discussions beginning September 2013 for the elaboration of an agreed post-2015 global development agenda.

The hunger, food and nutrition security consultation is one of 11 themes to be addressed in a post-2015 process led by the UN Development Group. Other themes are on governance; population dynamics; inequalities; growth and employment; health; education; environmental sustainability; conflict and fragility; water; and energy.
