Experts Prepare for IPBES Plenary Meetings, Discuss Capacity Building
story highlights

A meeting on IPBES and Capacity Building, hosted by the Governments of Brazil and Norway, explored how IPBES can develop capacity in knowledge generation, assessment and policy support.

27 May 2011: An international expert meeting on the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and capacity building brought experts together to prepare for the upcoming IPBES plenary meetings and address IPBES’ capacity building mechanisms.

The expert meeting took place in Trondheim, Norway, from 25-27 May 2011, co-hosted by the Governments of Brazil and Norway, and planned and organized by the Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management.

The aim of the meeting was to inform and prepare for the IPBES plenary meetings, which will be organized by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in the fall of 2011 and spring of 2012, to operationalize IPBES. Sixty government and NGO representatives and experts, as well as members of intergovernmental organizations and multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs), discussed how IPBES might most effectively address capacity building, in particular in the areas of knowledge generation, assessment and policy support. Participants discussed the needs, options and key players, potential priorities and potential mechanisms for delivering capacity building.

The Co-Chairs of the Meeting, Braulio Dias, Brazil and Finn Katerås, Norway, prepared a draft outline of the report. In mid-June participants will have an opportunity to comment on a draft version of the full report. [IPBES Meeting News Release]
