Expert Report Explores Green Economy Transition

The study includes three papers, which address the macroeconomic policy implications of the transition, the interlinked issues of trade, investment and technology, and the risks of a green economy for developing countries and the domestic and international policies necessary to promote a green economy in developing countries according to the principles of sustainable development.

8 March 2011: A joint study has been released on the benefits, challenges and risks of the transition to a green economy. The study was prepared by a panel of experts, under the direction of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Division for Sustainable Development (UN-DESA/DSD), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), at the request of the first session of the Preparatory Committee for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio 2012).

The study includes three papers, which address: the macroeconomic policy implications of the transition, by José Antonio Ocampo; the interlinked issues of trade, investment and technology, by Aaron Cosbey; and the risks of a green economy for developing countries and the domestic and international policies necessary to promote a green economy in developing countries according to the principles of sustainable development, by Martin Khor. The results were discussed in a side event at the second session of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom II).
