European Commission Reports on Controls for Food Safety and Animal Health
story highlights

The European Commission has released a report that reviews EU member States' official controls on food safety, animal health and animal welfare and plant health, including animal disease eradication programmes and contingency plans, and measures to protect plant health.

27 March 2012: The European Commission has presented its annual report to the European Parliament and to the Council on the overall operation of official controls in the Member States on food safety, animal health and animal welfare and plant health. The report concludes that control measures and compliance with relevant EU legislation are satisfactory.

The report reviews annual reports by member States, EU audits and inspections and other sources of information submitted under the EU feed and food controls regulation, including on measures to control animal diseases and plant pests.

On animal health, the report reviews: disease eradication programmes for bovine tuberculosis and brucelliosis, rabies and classical swine fever; and contingency plans for food-and-mouth disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), and bluetongue.

On plant health, the report covers import control of regulated articles, harmful organism outbreaks, and the implementation of international plant health controls.
