4 February 2010: The European Commission has announced a series of immediate and future measures to address the cyber attacks on the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) registries that occurred on 28 January 2010.
The Commission reports that fake emails asked EU ETS registries users to log on to a malicious website and disclose their user identification code and password, and that some fraudulent transactions were carried out. The Commission, however, assured that the security of the EU Registry and the EU Independent Transaction Log has not been compromised. Alerted by the Netherlands and Norway, the Commission encouraged all Member States in investigating these transactions, and carried out investigations of the fake website to close it definitively. The Commission has also announced that it will prepare revised security guidelines for registries and an action plan aiming at harmonizing the approach to tackle future cyber attacks.
