3 December 2010: The EU has approved a 3.4 million euro project, to be implemented by UNICEF, for increasing access to safe and sustainable water and sanitation, and reducing water-related diseases in Kiribati.

The project will target the small and remote outer islands of Kiribati, focusing on conducting hydro-geological assessments of groundwater resources, assessing existing water and sanitation infrastructures, repairing faulty structures and installing new rainwater harvesting systems with safe storage facilities. It is also expected to enhance governance capacity at community level to ensure the sustainable operation and maintenance of water infrastructure facilities. The project will further include intensive training and awareness raising campaigns on water sanitation and hygiene. [EU Press Release]
