September 2012: The September issue of “Making a SPLASH!” newsletter released by the SPLASH Sanitation Research Programme of the EU Water Initiative (EUWI) European Research Area Network (ERA-net) highlights EUWI activities at World Water Week in August, programme updates, and SPLASH projects in Cameroon and Uganda.

The newsletter reports on the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the EUWI at the World Water Week, which took place in Stockholm, Sweden, in August 2012. Events at World Water Week provided the SPLASH programme the opportunity to present a recent SPLASH research management course and workshops that took place in Ethiopia, Niger and in the Volta basin.

The newsletter describes the MAFADY project on household sanitation chains in the Yaoundé, Cameroon, and in the coastal zone of Douala. It indicates that: the first phases of this project include the quantification and characterization of sludge; steering committee meetings have been complete; and the next phase includes understanding sewage sludge management challenges.

The newsletter also discusses U-ACT, a project in Kampala, Uganda, to analyze urban sanitation and design interventions to enhance access to sanitation in urban slums. The project has already constructed 136 VIP latrines. [Publication: SPLASH Newsletter, September 2012]
