4 November 2010: The European Commission has allocated €1.5 million to provide humanitarian assistance to the most vulnerable people affected by droughts in the Bolivian region of Chaco, as well as measures reducing vulnerability in future droughts and enhancing the resilience of communities.
This decision targets subsistence farmers and small livestock producers, and will cover the humanitarian and recovery measures to increase water access and food security, including disaster risk reduction (DRR) activities in the promotion of “drought sustainable response methodologies,” and the strengthening of inclusive coordination structures. EU assistance will address current humanitarian needs and support recovery and capacity building of communities and authorities to deal with recurrent water deficits, which are exacerbated by climate change.
