EU FAO FLEGT Endorses Projects in Asia, Africa and Latin America

The Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) programme of the European Union (EU) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has endorsed 14 projects from Latin America and Asia.

FAO EU23 April 2013: The Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) programme of the European Union (EU) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has endorsed 14 projects from Latin America, Africa and Asia.

The projects include timber tracking in Nepal; investment in smallholder forests in Myanmar; improved forest governance in Guatemala; combating illegal forest activities in Belize; forestry law and governance in Nigeria; forestry administration in Sierra Leone; a study on timber commodity chain and legal compliance levels in Kenya; building civil society capacity in Côte d’Ivoire; and enhanced compliance in the timber trade in Uganda.

The Programme has also provided direct assistance to Côte d’Ivoire, Guyana, Honduras, and Viet Nam and will soon be expanding further into Central America.

To facilitate this expansion, the programme will be introduced at the meeting of the Forestry Working Group of the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD) to be held in San José, Costa Rica, on 24-26 April 2013.

The call for proposals for funding for countries with Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPA) under negotiation or implementation will remain open until the 30 June 2013. [FAO Press Release] [EU FAO FLEGT Programme Website]
