13 February 2012: Under the patronage of Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for the Environment, the Czech Environmental Partnership Foundation has launched a contest for the European tree of the year. The contest aims to encourage Europeans to “care more for trees” through stories of the connections between the trees and local communities, as well as to highlight the protection of old trees and biodiversity, according to the Czech Environmental Partnership Foundation.

Participants can vote online for their favorite tree from Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Poland, Romania or Slovakia, until 29 February 2012. The result will be announced on 1 March, followed by an award ceremony in Brussels, Belgium. The contest has financial support from the State Environmental Fund and the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic. [IUCN Press Release] [European Tree of the Year Contest]
