9 December 2010: A new report of the European Commission, titled “A Decade of EU-funded Research,” summarizes the results of 50 research projects addressing the safety of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for the environment and for animal and human health.

The projects were launched between 2001 and 2010 and received a total of €200 million, as part of a 25-year research support program on GMOs. The report follows up on previous EU publications aimed at disseminating the results of research on GMO safety to scientists, regulatory bodies and the public. Among other issues, the book includes research results on: tools and methods for detecting GMOs in food and feed; approaches for assessing the potential health effects of genetically modified food; crop improvement by genetic modification, such as pathogen resistance; improving the sustainability of agriculture by enhancing the nitrogen use efficiency of crops; managing gene flow, gene transfer and coexistence; and assessing the effects of GMOs on biodiversity.
