6 October 2009: Leaders of the European Union (EU) and Brazil agreed to step up efforts towards the inclusion of reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) in the outcome to be reached in Copenhagen and to establish an “effective and reliable means of support for REDD” under the climate change Convention.

They further agreed to establish a cooperation forum to encourage low-carbon growth and promote clean technology, and to hold a high-level meeting in November to better prepare for the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference. Swedish Prime Minister Reinfeldt, who holds the EU Presidency, Brazilian President Lula and European Commission President Barroso met in Stockholm, Sweden, on 6 October, at the third EU-Brazil Summit. The resulting joint declaration includes a section on climate change, energy, biodiversity and sustainable development, in which support was also expressed for Brazil’s offer to organize a UN high-level event on sustainable development in 2012 in Brazil, with its main focus on the “green economy.” [ Press release ][ Joint declaration ]
