Essay Competition Launched Ahead of Rio+20

Primary and secondary school students are invited to write essays titled “Dear Mr.

UN Secretary-General,” explaining what they think governments and other world leaders should do to build a sustainable future.

Winning essays will be presented to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and the top winning schools will be invited to participate in an annual "Schools Debate" on 16-17 May 2012.

7 February 2012: The Living Rainforest, an education programme of the Trust for Sustainable Living in the UK, has launched an International Schools Essay Competition in the lead-up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The competition asks children to outline what governments and world leaders should do to build a more sustainable future.

The competition, titled “Dear Mr. UN Secretary-General …,” and an accompanying “Schools Debate,” are aimed at primary students (ages 7-11) and secondary students (ages 11-16) and their teachers. The winning essays will be published on the competition website and presented to the UN Secretary-General, and winners will be invited to attend the UNCSD.
