ESMAP Holds Workshop on Concentrated Solar Power for Developing Countries
story highlights

The workshop saw discussions on: the status of CSP technology and deployment; initiatives and policies needed to scale up CSP; barriers to expansion; shared challenges faced by developing countries; and the costs and benefits of CSP versus solar photovoltaic (PV).

27 June 2012: During the World Renewable Energy Forum held in Denver, Colorado, from 12-17 May 2012, the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) of the World Bank convened a workshop and tours on concentrated solar power (CSP), titled “Meeting the Dual Goal of Energy Access and Sustainability—CSP Deployment in Developing Countries.”

The workshop saw discussions on: the status of CSP technology and deployment; initiatives and policies needed to scale up CSP; barriers to expansion; shared challenges faced by developing countries; and the costs and benefits of CSP versus solar photovoltaic (PV). Panelists from South Africa, Morocco, India and Mexico relayed progress from their home countries on CSP Following the forum, participants visited existing CSP utilities and plants under construction in California and Nevada.
