16 October 2008: The European Environment Agency (EEA) released a report entitled “Greenhouse gas emission trends and projections in Europe 2008,” which details each of the 15 nations’ historic emissions
(1990-2006) and provides an estimate of Europe’s emissions situation during the
Kyoto Protocol commitment period (2008–2012).

The report finds that the EU is
expected to meet its collective target to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by
8% for the period 2008–2012. However, it indicates that emission performance
has been mixed in the EU-15, with three member States, Denmark, Italy and
Spain, being “off their Kyoto track.” Nonetheless, taking into account the
expected performance of other member States, the EU-15 as a whole should meet
its Kyoto commitment.
The EEA also estimates the countries’ use of carbon
sinks, noting that ten of the EU-15 have planned to use the Kyoto Mechanisms. [EEA Press Release] [Executive Summary] [Country Profiles]
