10 May 2012: The Energy and Climate Partnership for the Americas (ECPA) held a Workshop on Energy Efficiency Strengthening in Social and Low-Income Housing on 10 May 2012, in Santiago, Chile.

Among other topics, workshop participants discussed the evolution of Chile’s institutions and policies regarding energy efficiency, its role in the national energy strategy, the activities of the Chilean Energy Efficiency Agency (AChEE), and the Chilean programme for certification of housing and thermal retrofitting. Participants also heard a presentation by Mexico on its “green mortgage” program that facilitates the financing of thermal retrofitting in low-income dwellings.

In the afternoon, the workshop broke into working groups for discussions about the national experiences of participants in promoting energy efficiency in homes, including policies, legislation and regulations and the challenges and opportunities identified, experiences gained and achievements realized. Each group then reported out to plenary for general discussion.

Organized and conducted by the Organization of American States (OAS) and Mexico’s National Commission for Energy Efficiency (CONUEE), the workshop was held against the background of the International Fair of Technologies (IFT) 2012 International Renewable Energy Forum. The OAS is the executing agency for ECPA and Mexico chairs ECPA’s Energy Efficiency Working Group. [ECPA Press Release]
