EBRD Finances Energy Efficiency Project in Bulgaria

EBRD signed a series of grant agreements worth €73.8 million with three companies in Bulgaria to support energy efficiency projects and decommissioning nuclear-related programmes.

29 June 2011: The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has signed €73.8 million worth of grant agreements with three companies in Bulgaria to boost energy infrastructure and service quality, including programmes related to the decommissioning of the Kozloduy nuclear power plant.

The grant agreements, signed in the presence of Traicho Traikov, the Bulgarian Minister of the Economy, Energy and Tourism, were extended under the EBRD-managed Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund (KIDSF), set up as compensation for the closure of Kozloduy’s four nuclear plant units.

National Electric Company (NEK) will use €38 million of the total grant amount to construct two new 400 kV power transmission lines due to be completed in three years. The Sofia District Heating Company will use €1.8 million of the financing for a series of projects that will save 2,500 MWh of energy a year. The Kozloduy NPP State Agency for Radioactive Waste will receive €34 million for decommissioning nuclear-related programmes. [EBRD Press Release]
