8 March 2013: The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) are to initiate support of a €1.2 billion thermal power plant and urban infrastructure project in Sostanj, Slovenia. EBRD will provide €200 million and the European Investment Bank (EIB) €550 million.

According to an EBRD spokesperson, the new plant will provide significant improvement of net energy efficiency, moving up from an average current value of 30% to more than 42%, resulting in a reduction of 1.1 million tons of coal consumption per annum and corresponding CO2 emissions reductions of 1.2 million tons– around 8% of the total greenhouse gas emissions of Slovenia. This reduction is part of the country’s EU and other international commitments and environmental requirements.

The new unit in the thermal power plant is also expected to reduce cost price of electric power generation and secure the future economic viability for the power sector in Slovenia’s Šaleška Valley. [EBRD News] [IISD RS Sources]
