28 July 2011: The Lake Victoria Region Water and Sanitation Initiative has completed its Training and Capacity Building Programme, a component of Phase 1 of the initiative. The programme, benefiting 11 towns in the region, will enable the provision of improved urban management and delivery of basic services.

The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), in collaboration with four partners – Netherlands Development Organization, the Gender and Water Alliance, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s Institute for Water Education (UNESCO-IHE) and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities – designed the programme following an assessment phase. It was implemented by a local non-governmental (NGO) partner, the Network for Water and Sanitation International.

The assessment highlighted the causes and extent of deficiencies in the management of water, sanitation and the environment. It also explored ways to address these gaps, including through coherent and synchronized actions.

A total of 2,511 people received training in the course of the capacity building programme. Other outputs included developing action plans at local, organizational and town levels by all participants, and ensuring that the action plans included details of interventions that can provide immediate results, as well as others to be implemented in the longer term. These action plans are expected to ensure, inter alia, the improvement of water services management, increased protection on water catchments and better governance for addressing the needs of the poor.
