Earth System Governance Project Issues Recommendations on IFSD

The Earth System Governance Project's new policy brief contains policy recommendations that include calls to: strengthen international environmental treaties; manage conflicts among multilateral agreements; upgrade the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to a specialized UN agency; and prepare global governance for a warmer world.

27 September 2011: The Earth System Governance Project has released a policy brief titled “Transforming Governance and Institutions for a Planet under Pressure. Revitalizing the Institutional Framework for Global Sustainability: Key Insights from Social Science Research.”

The brief outlines core areas that the authors suggest need urgent action in order to introduce a stronger institutional framework for sustainable development (IFSD). The brief offers an assessment of the state of knowledge on IFSD and on possible reform options. The authors present a number of recommendations, including: strengthen international environmental treaties; manage conflicts among multilateral agreements; fill regulatory gaps in international sustainability governance; upgrade the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to a specialized UN agency; better integrate sustainable development policies within the UN system; strengthen national governance; streamline and strengthen public–private governance networks and partnerships; strengthen accountability and legitimacy; address equity concerns within and among countries; and prepare global governance for a warmer world, particularly through global adaptation programmes.
