March 2013: The March edition of DESA News, a monthly news bulletin by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), highlights preparations by the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) for the International Day of Forests, to be celebrated for the first time on 21 March. UNFF is inviting the submission of information on planned celebrations.

Launch events for the first ever day will take place around the world, including an event in China with Wu Hongbo, Under-Secretary-General of UN-DESA. Other events will include tree planting, art, photo and film exhibits and social media outreach. International activities planned for the launch include the release of a mobile application on forest facts and the launch of the International Day of Forests logo.

The purpose of the day is to provide a platform to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests and of trees outside forests. [Publication: DESA News] [UN Forum on Forests]
