DESA Head Stresses Importance of SDGs, Rio Implementation, Post-2015 Agenda

In an interview with DESA News, USG Wu Hongbo said the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be “at the core” of the post-2015 development agenda.

He also spoke of the urgency to implement the remaining Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as much as possible, and to “push forward strongly” on implementing the outcomes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

October 2012: Wu Hongbo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs and head of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), gave an interview outlining his views and plans for the Department’s work. He said sustainable development is foremost on his list of priorities for DESA and also “the top priority” of the UN Secretary-General.

Wu said the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be “at the core” of the post-2015 development agenda. He also spoke of the urgency to implement the remaining Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as much as possible, and to “push forward strongly” on implementing the outcomes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), noting that these agendas have been raised with him by leaders of developing countries.
