story highlights

The deadline for nominations for the third AEWA Waterbird Conservation Award (2012) is 31 July 2011.

The Award recognizes "pioneer initiatives" that serve as models, and other efforts that have made a significant contribution to the conservation and sustainable use of waterbirds in the Agreement area.

June 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) has announced that nominations for the 2012 Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) Award will be accepted until 31 July 2011.

The AEWA Waterbird Conservation Award was established to recognize initiatives within the Agreement area that have made a significant contribution towards the conservation and sustainable use of waterbirds, especially “pioneer initiatives” that serve as models for others. The Secretariat invites nominations from citizens and institutions – governmental and non-governmental, including community groups or private sector enterprises – from any country in the Agreement area.

The winner in each category (individual and institutional) will receive a cash prize of US$5,000. The final decision on the award winners will be made by the AEWA Standing Committee at its seventh meeting, in November 2011. The award will be presented at the opening ceremony of the Fifth Session of the Meeting of the Parties, in May 2012, in La Rochelle, France. [Award Information]
