UN_Foundation18 October 2013: The UN Foundation is creating an Import Tariff and Barriers to Entry Database, in partnership with the US Department of Energy and World Bank. The database aims to make more transparent one of the most significant barriers to renewable energy uptake, and to assist importers in navigating entry into emerging markets.

The database aims to serve as a reference for businesses interested in comparing or entering markets for distributed generation of renewable energy in developing countries. It currently covers 57 countries, and contains information on: import tariffs; non-tariff barriers including ease of trade across boarders; local commercial climates including government transparency; and local resources and experts, where available. As the database grows, it is planned to include more countries, products and analysis.

The database is being developed to facilitate the accomplishment of the goals for the UN Secretary-General’s Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative. It is also a deliverable for the Global Lighting and Energy Access Program (Global LEAP). [SE4ALL Press Release] [Import Tariff and Barriers to Entry Database]
