costarica30 November 2014: The Government of Costa Rica has announced its temporary retirement from the Coalition for Rainforest Nations, an intergovernmental organization aimed to promote the responsible stewardship of the world’s tropical rainforests.

Citing concerns over the lack of transparency and democratic governance, the Government of Costal Rica announced its withdrawal from the body ahead of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP20) to the UNFCCC.

Costa Rica highlighted its active role in the coalition, noting it provided input that contributed to the adoption of the Warsaw Framework for REDD+ under the UNFCCC. It states, however, that the Government of Costa Rica was not consulted on procedural matters relating to the Chairmanship while reiterating its support for Panama’s candidacy to chairing the Coalition.

The Government of Costa Rica has indicated its intention to return to the coalition if issues on management are addressed. [IISD RS Sources][Coalition for Rainforest Nations website]
