May 2011: The March/April 2011 Newsletter of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) features articles on an anti-poaching project in Niger, a recent meeting on gorillas, and a workshop on migratory birds.

The guest article reviews an anti-poaching project initiated by the Government of Niger and CMS in the Termit/Tin Toumma region of Niger, which offers “the most important remaining refuges for wildlife in the entire Sahara.” The report on the recent Technical Meeting to the CMS Agreement on the Conservation of Gorillas and their Habitats, which convened from 29-30 March 2011, in Kigali, Rwanda, indicates that participants concluded that transboundary collaboration and coordination with UN peace-building missions, such as MONUSCO, and law enforcement agencies must be strengthened, with increased resources and training for law enforcement personnel and rangers. An international workshop dedicated to strengthening management and research on migratory birds along the African-Eurasian Flyways, which took place in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, from 22-23 March 2011, sought to identify ways of improving research and international cooperation between the Wadden Sea and other important sites for migratory birds along the African-Eurasian Flyways. This issue also reviews a number of CMS species campaigns. [Publication: March/April CMS Newsletter]
