CIFOR22 October 2014: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) convened a workshop for newspaper editors from Zambia in order to identify concrete actions to improve the number and quality of stories on climate change, forests and the environment.

The workshop was convened in Nyimba, Zambia and was meant to draw attention to the impacts of charcoal production and deforestation on local populations, as well as increase awareness of deforestation in general. Zambia has one of the highest rates of deforestation, up to 300,000 hectares per year, in the world.

Overall, the workshop concluded that the media’s lack of awareness of environmental issues lowers the transmission of environment-related stories and press. The workshop was convened as an activity under the US$3.1 million Nyimba Forest Project funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). CIFOR is part of the CGIAR Consortium.
