CIFOR28 May 2015: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) released its 2014 annual report highlighting achievements in research, policy development and actions on the ground. In particular, the report covers CIFOR’s 70 active projects across 42 countries as well as 441 publications and 158 partnerships, describing how they contribute to ‘Forests for a sustainable future,’ the theme and title of the report.

The annual report reflects a shift in global priorities towards forests within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a new agreement on climate change. Accordingly, the report notes that CIFOR has adopted five flagship projects: smallholders, management of forest and trees, landscapes, climate change, and trade and investment.

With an organizational focus on research, information exchange and capacity building, the report mentions projects on fire and haze in Southeast Asia, smallholder timber trading in Peru, forest certification in the Congo Basin and forestry on farms in Indonesia, among others. With regard to policy work, the report mentions the ongoing controversy related to palm oil, climate change adaptation in West Africa and poverty in forests. The report also describes a number of networks to support capacity building and data exchange, including tools for gender-sensitive decision-making and data centers for information collected from forest plots. CIFOR is part of the CGIAR Consortium. [CIFOR Press Release] [Publication: Forests for a sustainable future – Annual report 2014]
