The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) April News Update highlights the launch of a new research program in South-East Asia and a blog post by the Director General calling for a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on landscapes.

CIFOR6 May 2013: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) April News Update highlights the launch of a new research program in South-East Asia and a blog post by the Director General on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The new research program, to be based in India, intends to increase knowledge and information on forests in the Western Ghats mountains. The program will focus on the landscape approach to forest research and management and will support South-South cooperation for sustainable forest management (SFM).

The newsletter also reports on the CIFOR Director General’s blog post on the inclusion of landscapes in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The post suggests five SDGs on sustainable landscapes, social protection, green growth with equity, infrastructure for all, and equal opportunities. Within the SDG on sustainable landscapes, the Director General proposes targets on livelihood provisions, ecosystem services, products and resource efficiency.

Other issues covered in the news brief include: Norway’s shift away from palm oil investments in its pension funds, a rebuttal of the claim that climate change adaptation is sufficient, and a piece on children living in Indonesian forests on Borneo.
