CIFOR3 December 2014: In order to highlight experiences in implementing REDD+, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) reviewed the Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership (KFCP) for emission reductions in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. The review emphasizes the need for transparency in REDD+.

The call for greater transparency emerges from good practices, including the negotiation of clear village agreements with each community, as well as project weaknesses such as initial difficult access to project documents.

The review also takes note of the difficult political environment under which the KFCP was implemented with opposition from Australia as well as the media and some people within local communities. Other difficulties cited include the long delay in negotiating village agreements and differences in priorities between local people, who sought support for agroforestry and rubber production and the stated project activities.

The KFCP is a joint initiative by the governments of Australia and Indonesia and is featured in the CIFOR Global Comparative Study on REDD+. The project takes place in an area of peatlands that was previously drained for rice cultivation. CIFOR is part of the CGIAR Consortium. [CIFOR Press Release] [Global Comparative Study on REDD+]
