CIFOR8 October 2014: In an assessment of payments for ecosystem services (PES) mechanisms, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) concludes that social equity issues are often overlooked. The study, titled ‘Social Equity Matters in Payments for Ecosystem Services,’ finds that in an effort to maximize efficiency and the use of budgets, conservation outcomes may actually be put at risk.

Based on case studies demonstrating both positive and negative results from a social equity perspective, the study states that the recognition of rights, the fair distribution of costs and benefits, and the ability to participate can have significant impacts on project outcomes. The study presents a number of recommendations noting the importance of a participatory approach to PES design and implementation. It calls for the adoption of social and environmental safeguards and for further research on the trade-offs between social equity and efficiency.
